Grandparent’s Day is a special occasion to honor and celebrate the cherished bond between grandparents and their grandchildren. One heartfelt way to show appreciation is by creating personalized mason jar crafts with your kids, transforming simple jars into treasured keepsakes. This hands-on activity is not only fun and engaging for children but also allows them to express their love and creativity. In this blog, we’ll walk you through the steps to make a charming mason jar craft that will delight grandparents and make Grandparents’ Day even more memorable.
Materials Needed for Mason Jar Craft:
- 16oz mason jar
- Glitter glue or clear glue
- Liquid watercolor
- Paint brush
- Contact Paper
- Mod Podge Dishwasher Safe Gloss
- Small picture of grandkids (printed on standard printer paper)
- Ribbon (optional)
- Flared top votive candle holder (optional)
Instructions for Grandparent’s Day Gift
- Ask your child to pick a color they want to paint the mason jar. Mix a few drops of that watercolor with the glue until you have the desired shade.
- Cut out the picture to the size you want so that it will fit on one side of the mason jar. Trace the outline on contact paper and cut it out.
- Adhere the contact paper to the flattest part of the mason jar and then paint the jar. This will leave one section untouched.
- After it is dry, remove the contact paper. Then adhere the picture of the grandkids to the unpainted area using Mod Podge.
- Paint the whole jar, including over the picture, with Mod Podge to seal the Grandparents’ Day gift with a beautiful gloss.
Customize it & Make it Your Own
- Now you can customize the mason jar craft to whatever suits your grandparents best. Do you think they would like a pen and pencil jar, candle, candy jar, flower vase, or coin jar? If it is not going to be a candle, you can tie a ribbon around the top.
- Fill It: Add the appropriate filler: candy, pens, handpicked wildflowers, or a few coins to get started.
- The Top: If it is a coin jar, trace the lid on craft foam paper. Then cut a slit, as shown in this video. For the candy jar, keep the lid intact. For a pen jar or wildflower vase, just twist on the screw band.
- If you decide to make the Grandparents’ Day craft into a candle, there is one more step. Place the flared top votive candle holder on top of the jar and twist the screw band on to hold it in place. Lastly, add a votive candle!
- Note that this mason jar craft lasts longer when hand-washed. The dishwasher safe gloss is the best waterproof seal on glass, but dishwashers can still chip the art sometimes. Additionally, if you know that you want to make a mason jar vase from the start then a 32oz jar may suit your Grandparent’s Day craft better.
Personalized Gifts are from the Heart
Crafting a personalized mason jar with your kids is a wonderful way to celebrate Grandparents’ Day, creating lasting memories and a gift that grandparents will treasure. Not only will your children enjoy this mason jar craft, but they will also be creating a beautiful keepsake that will strengthen the special bond between generations. So gather your supplies, let your imaginations run wild, and make this Grandparents’ Day truly unforgettable with a handmade gift from the heart.
