Lactation Consultation FAQs

How quickly can I see someone?2020-10-15T19:16:53-04:00

We strive to schedule appointments within 24-48 hours. Contact us to schedule an appointment.

When should I call you?2020-10-15T19:18:37-04:00

It’s best to call us after you have delivered and are still in the hospital, so that we can come to see you during your first day or two at home. Your milk usually comes in once you’re home, and it can be helpful to have someone come in to let you know when this has happened and the changes you may begin to see with feeding patterns.

In the hospital, you have an abundance of support. When you get home from the hospital, you may feel a bit on your own, so we want to provide an extension of that support, helping you to make sure that your baby is eating right and that the baby is getting enough milk during feedings. You don’t need to have a colossal problem for us to come in. Honestly, it’s nice to have an expert confirm that you’re doing it right and offer you one-on-one breastfeeding support in the comfort and privacy of your own home.

Can we talk about other newborn care topics (i.e. eating and sleeping schedule, pacifier use, safe sleep, etc.)?2021-10-12T09:53:50-04:00

Absolutely! First-time parents generally have tons of questions and we’re happy to be a support to you.

If this is your first time bringing home a baby, we encourage you to book a full 2-hour session or 90-minute virtual session. This 2-hour or 90-minute visit will start with discussing your feeding choice at length and then we can discuss other topics as you have questions.

We will take the time to answer all of you and your partner’s questions thoroughly, as well as provide you with hands-on demonstration and practice with newborn care items, as requested.

Can we talk about pumping?2021-10-13T21:49:17-04:00

Yes! We will cover pumping in our visit. This is included in our regular lactation consult. We will teach you how to use your pump, and discuss the ins-and-outs of pumping, along with any other questions you may have.

What will I do with the lactation consultant during the visit?2021-10-13T21:51:24-04:00

Each lactation consultation visit is 2 hours long and done in your home / or 90-minutes virtually. Just before our scheduled appointment, we ask that you please try and have your baby ready for a feed if possible and a clean diaper and a swaddle for when we arrive.

This visit is all about you! We will provide personalized breastfeeding instruction and answer any questions you have. We will go through your baby’s latch, and if something isn’t quite right, we will help make adjustments to improve it. Our lactation consultant will show you the best practices to feel comfortable when you feed your baby. We can help you create a feeding schedule for your newborn, or provide feedback to make your existing feeding schedule work even better.

Will my visit be covered by my insurance?2021-10-12T10:22:33-04:00

Many insurance companies will reimburse you for one or more lactation visits. While Boston Baby Nurse & Nanny is a private company and cannot bill your insurance company directly, we will provide you with a receipt and a detailed invoice. Your invoice will include specific information that your insurance company is seeking, such as diagnosis codes for medical billing, to provide you with your reimbursement.

You may also choose to pay Boston Baby Nurse & Nanny with your FSA or HSA card.

Olivia was an invaluable resource for us in the weeks after my son’s birth. He had a difficult time latching, which caused me significant pain. We spoke to three different lactation consultants before meeting with Olivia. Olivia was the first to offer a home visit. She was prompt, friendly, warm, reassuring, and full of expert advice. She did a more thorough exam of my son’s mouth than any of our other lactation consultants, thereby discovering a tongue tie that was later confirmed and treated by a specialist surgeon. Olivia was also the first person to tell me about different brands of breast pump flanges, which greatly improved my pumping experience. Her approach is clearly mother-centered as well as baby-centered; she was tremendously validating and compassionate during a time when I was second-guessing everything, and for that I will be forever grateful. I could not recommend Olivia’s services more highly!
