A Newborn Care Expert (NCE) is a specially trained person who cares for infants, typically during their first 3-4 months of life. Newborn Care Specialist, Baby Nurse, and Newborn Care Expert are used interchangeably. There is no official independent certifying body overseeing this industry. An NCE has expertise in infant development, feedings, sleep-training, CPR and First Aid, managing multiples, and caring for babies with special needs and medical conditions. Some nurses also decide to become overnight caregivers for infants. Especially in the case of complicated medical conditions, such as babies who were in the NICU or require medication, a nurse can be a great choice.
At Boston Baby Nurse & Nanny we have a team of Newborn Care Experts. Our NCEs complete a comprehensive certification program based on AAP standards. They have extensive training in caring for multiples, establishing healthy sleep habits, and following best practices while caring for newborns. They also have an understanding of Postpartum Mood Disorders.
Help Your Baby Get A Good Night Sleep
Newborn Care Specialists are able to work with families but are also able to work with minimal guidance from parents. In fact, they have extensive experience and training with newborns so they are well aware of the typical appearance and behaviors of healthy newborns. They are very comfortable supporting unique family values and preferences. A baby nurse will support, without judgment, the parents’ choice to breastfeed or formula feed. This is a decision each family has to make and there are many factors to consider.
Some families will choose to use overnight newborn care seven nights a week during the first few weeks, few months, or even for the first year of their child’s life. Working parents may only want weeknight coverage so they can get a good night’s sleep before work. Other parents will decide to use a night nurse two or three nights a week to catch up on sleep. Night nurses typically start late in the evening and work overnight, but some families decide they would like daytime coverage or even 24/7 care for their child.
Would a Night Nanny Help Your Baby to Sleep Better?
Newborn Care Experts sometimes referred to as night nannies are happy to help with a variety of tasks related to the infant. They will feed the baby pumped milk or formula or bring the baby to mom to breastfeed. They will prepare, wash, and sterilize bottles and pump parts. An NCE will use his/her skills to deal with and educate parents on baby-specific health issues such as cradle cap, circumcision care, umbilical cord care, diaper rash, reflux, colic, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
Other Duties of a Night Nanny/Newborn Care Expert
The baby nurse will soothe the baby, change, and bathe the baby, and care for his/her needs. Organizing the nursery and doing the baby’s laundry are other tasks the night nurse is happy to help with while the baby is sleeping. During the visit, the NCS will keep a log of sleeping, feeding, and changing times to help establish a schedule. Not only do baby nurses help with the care of the baby, they are happy to help with other baby-related household tasks such as the baby’s laundry, bottle and pump preparation, and bottle and pump sanitation.
Each family has to decide whether or not and how frequently they want to use a baby nurse. An NCS can be a tremendous resource for families with a wealth of experience and knowledge about newborns. A baby nurse is specially trained to care for your baby’s needs overnight so you can get some much needed sleep.
