Are you trying to conceive? Remember these helpful tips as you are trying to get pregnant.
Timing Ovulation
Most couples conceive within a year of trying so try not to get worried if you do not get pregnant in the first few months. Timing is crucial when you are trying to get pregnant. Women are able to get pregnant while they are ovulating. Ovulation occurs at about day 14 of a 28-day cycle and you are most fertile two to three days before ovulation and 12 to 24 hours after. There are tools to help you time ovulation in order to maximize your chances of getting pregnant.
- Use digital ovulation tests which detect the luteinizing hormone (LH) to chart your fertility pattern.
- Track your basal body temperature because it increases slightly with ovulation.
- Take note of your cervical mucus discharge. Before ovulation the mucus is usually clear, slippery and stretchy, like raw egg whites.
Exercise
Moderate exercise can improve your chances of conceiving more than vigorous exercise. Get into the habit of incorporating exercise such as brisk walking or swimming into your routine. But women should be mindful not to over exercise because this can lead to amenorrhea, a condition where a woman who has had normal periods temporarily stops getting them.
Healthy Eating
It is essential to eat healthy as you are trying to get pregnant to ensure that your growing baby gets all the nutrients they need. Also, stop drinking alcohol and using tobacco products and think about lowering your caffeine intake. Most doctors recommend that women take a prenatal vitamin when they are trying to get conceive. At the minimum 400 micrograms of folic acid should be consumed every day at least one month before you become pregnant and during your entire pregnancy. Folic acid can help prevent major birth defects of the baby’s brain and spine that occur within the first few weeks of pregnancy.
Support from Loved Ones
Try to stay positive and hopeful throughout the process. Keep in mind that most couples conceive within one year not a few months. Trying to get pregnant can be an emotionally, mentally, and physically draining for you and your partner. Spend time with your friends and family and seek support from those around you. Stress can have a negative effect on a woman’s fertility. Find ways to destress such as yoga, meditation, and quality time with the people you love.
Ways to Destress
- Meditate
- Visualize yourself relaxed
- Breathe deeply
- Take a time out
- Show some love
- Give yourself a massage
Focus on Your Relationship
It is important to nurture your relationship with your partner as you are trying to conceive. Remember that a baby will totally change your relationship. If you and your partner are ready to start a family be prepared for the emotional and physical changes that come with trying to conceive, pregnancy, and parenthood. Be loving and supportive towards one another and try not to be anxious.
