Spring is just days away so let’s welcome the warm weather with this Spring art project. You can discuss the animals that start to reappear along with the grass that was hiding under the snow. These animal puppets are also great for Passover and Easter projects. You can make the bunny with your child to prepare for Easter as you talk about what to expect on the holiday. To prepare for Passover you can make the frog and discuss the ten plagues as well as what they will find on the Seder plate. Here are a few children’s books that would be a great introduction before trying out the Spring art project: Welcome Back Spring!, Let My People Go! and The Berenstain Bears and the Easter Story.

Spring Art Project Materials:

  • Small paper lunch bags
  • Googly eyes
  • Construction paper
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Paint and paintbrush
  • Pompoms (optional)

Spring Art Project Directions:

Ask your child if they would like to make a bunny or frog for their first Spring art project to welcome in the season. If your child has a different idea that came to them from reading one of the book suggestions, then let them create their own unique puppet. Begin by painting the bag whatever color their animal is going to be.

While the paint dries work on other pieces. Older children can cut out their own arms and legs. For younger children you can have green and brown strips of paper already cut out. Show the children how to fold the strip of paper back and forth to make accordion arms and legs. If a child wants to have a white or even pink bunny that is fine too. Let them be creative and applaud them for thinking outside of the box.

Cut out any other pieces their animal needs: ears for the bunny, tongue for the frog, or maybe even brown spots for the frog. Now they can glue on the arms, legs, ears, and eyes. Make sure to glue the legs on the front layer of the bag so that when they put their hand inside of the bag it doesn’t block the legs from being seen. If you have pompoms, they can glue one as the bunny’s nose or a couple for a fluffy tail. Take a look, does the puppet need anything else? You can ask the children what their animal eats. Should you cut out a carrot or fly to include in a puppet show?

Once the puppets are dry, the kids can use them to act out a play about the upcoming holiday or show what happens when Spring arrives. If your kids really enjoy putting on a show you can make a whole puppet theater with them!
